This wisdom is especially true with highly tuned engines that feature high power bands in the rev range. Narrower ratios ensure that the engine can remain in this power range while accelerating through the gears. Due to the fact that all recently produced Vespa gearboxes only contain four gears, narrower ratios quickly limit the maximum speed produced. More gears are the obvious solution, but a considerable challenge considering the compact size of the Vespa engine. A fresh and extremely innovative answer has recently been presented by BFA. A high-end gearbox solution for use in advanced racing projects based on the original engine casings. This five-speed transmission kit from BFA, intended for the Smallframe Vespa engine, is of high quality, has an intensive production process and an extremely innovative construction. Using a few engineering tricks, they managed to make the 5-gear construction shoe with an identical tooth-to-tooth contact width to that found on the original four! First, they redesigned the internal kick starter mechanism. This new design makes a slight modification to the kick starter shaft necessary. An advantage of this new setup is that the engine can be kicked, while the clutch lever is pulled. Secondly, the crankshaft gears have chamfered flanks and are now wrapped in place instead of being held by rings. They have redesigned the input shaft with individual gears and the selector spider with larger internal diameters. The number of selector spider arms has been doubled to eight. To make it possible to modify the kickstart mechanism, the BFA transmission kit is also required. There is a choice of three separately sized cogs for this transmission kit. Five-speed groupset / high-end tuner / BFA / smallframe / eight-arm selector Conclusion: A high-end product, facilitating engine tuning at the highest level. Every engine can be equipped with a much wider effective potential! The additional time and effort required to produce and possibly adapt this transmission are easily outweighed by the dynamic advantage it provides!
